Project Overview: Generator Rewinding at Hongai Anchorage

In February 2024, Bacviet Commercial & Shiptechnical Company successfully completed a generator stator rewinding project for Bulk Carrier MSM (IMO: 9121730) (information from https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/details/9121730) at Hongai anchorage, Vietnam.

The vessel, built in 1997 and sailing under the flag of Panama, required urgent restoration of Generator No.3 (NISHISHIBA ELECTRIC CO., LTD – 600KVA, 450V, 60Hz, 10 Poles, 720 RPM) after insulation failure and overheating issues were detected during operation.

The project was carried out under the supervision of the owner Goldenking Shipping Co. Ltd (China), with Bacviet Ship Repair appointed as the service provider for full disassembly, rewinding, and onboard reinstallation.

Scope of Work

The complete generator rewinding package included the following stages:

1. Inspection & Disassembly
   • Technician boarding at Hongai anchorage.
   • Disconnecting electrical cables and coupling from generator shaft.
   • Removing mounting bolts, foundation supports, and ventilation covers.
   • Lifting generator out of engine room using ship crane and service boat.
2. Transportation & Workshop Handling
   • Generator stator transferred to Bacviet’s specialized workshop in Haiphong City.
   • Careful packaging and transportation ensuring no vibration or moisture damage.
3. Rewinding & Restoration at Workshop
   • Removing burnt coils and cleaning stator core.
   • Rewinding with class-approved copper wire.
   • Re-varnishing with high-dielectric marine epoxy resin.
   • Controlled heating and baking using temperature-adjustable ovens.
   • Insulation resistance (Mega-Ohm) testing after varnish curing.
   • Dynamic balancing and dimensional verification before delivery.
4. Onboard Installation & Testing
   • Reinstallation of stator and rotor.
   • Shaft alignment and coupling adjustment.
   • Running test and load test with ship crew until stable output achieved.

Duration: 11th–16th February 2024 (Total 6 days including disassembly, rewinding, transport, reinstallation, and testing).

Location: Hongai Anchorage, Quang Ninh Province, Vietnam.
